GLOWS is thrilled to announce the launch of a new series of coding camps aimed at inspiring youth 10+ to dive into the world of computational thinking, artificial intelligence and augmented reality.

Youth from around the Kootenay region will learn the fundamental principles of coding, solve engineering challenges, and combine the power of coding and augmented reality.

These camps will take students out of the ‘gaming’ realm of the Minecraft ecosystem and move them into the developer’s world.

“It’s really important to distinguish between being tech-savvy and digital/technological literacy. Most youth today are already tech-savvy. What we’re encouraging here at GLOWS is a much deeper understanding and exposure to broader concepts like getting youth to think about what’s happening behind their screens, and teaching them those skills.” said GLOWS Program Manager Tanya Malcolm.

Camp #2: Engineering Eco-Challenge in Minecraft

Sat. Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. MST
Click here to register for this camp.

In this unique camp participants will use coding and an artificial intelligence (AI) robot to work in real life scenarios to save the planet. Learners will use the Minecraft worlds as a testing ground to improve their robots’ AI. Minecraft is ideal for AI research because it offers endless possibilities, ranging from simple tasks like walking around looking for treasure to complex ones like building a structure with a group of teammates. We will look at a real life world issue and discover how we can use AI in Minecraft to help solve this complex problem.

Camp #3: Minecraft Houses into Augmented Reality for Real World Display

Sat. March 19 at 10 a.m. MST
Click here to register for this camp.

It’s time to look at how we can create our own unique houses and bring that design into reality with augmented reality (AR). In this course you will build your dream house in Minecraft then learn how you can bring that design in CoSpaces where you can use the engine’s powerful block based coding system and 3D design capabilities to put your house into reality and make it interactive. Students will be designing a User interface in CoSpaces to show potential customers about their house. This is the future of design and display where Minecraft and CoSpaces merge together!

GLOWS, a program of Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST), provides the children and youth of today with inspiration to become tomorrow’s engineers, scientists, computer programmers and so much more!
