When Henry Ford adopted the five-day workweek back in 1926, critics called it radical. Zoom founder and CEO Eric Yuan thinks corporate America is right on the cusp of the next big evolution, and this time, it will take us down to four days.
Speaking in a recent interview with Upstarts Media, Yuan predicted that the standard five-day workweek will become obsolete within three to five years. His forecast isn’t built on cutting business goals or asking employees to cram 40 hours into fewer days. Instead, it relies on the rapid evolution of AI creating “digital twins” that handle the routine overhead dragging down modern productivity.
Yuan envisions personalized AI avatars stepping in to tackle repetitive pre-meeting prep and administrative tasks rather than replacing human workers. In an hour-long negotiation, for instance, a digital twin could handle the first 45 to 50 minutes running through document details and routine context. That frees humans to step in for the final 10 minutes to focus on relationship-building, high-leverage negotiation, and critical decision-making.
Yuan is already experimenting with the concept himself, using an AI avatar over the past three quarters to read through his earnings call scripts before jumping into the live video stream strictly for the Q&A segment, he told the publication.
While skepticism remains about whether public companies and global markets will readily embrace a shorter week, Yuan argues that delegating busywork will drive better human engagement rather than workplace isolation. Clearing administrative friction leaves room for more meaningful face-to-face collaboration and creative output.
For company leaders navigating productivity, AI integration, and employee retention, this shift redefines how work gets done. As AI automates routine tasks, tracking completed business objectives becomes far more valuable than counting hours logged in a chair. Giving teams bottom-up access to user-friendly AI tools allows them to lower daily friction organically, while establishing early trust and security guardrails ensures that automated workflows stay safe as AI participation expands.
While a permanent three-day weekend across corporate America remains only a prediction for now, the underlying trajectory is clear: founders and leaders who learn to automate administrative fatigue today will be best positioned to build agile, burnout-resistant teams when that future arrives.
