The Youtube channel of India’s Supreme Court was compromised, promoting a scam involving XRP cryptocurrency instead of its usual live hearings. The breach temporarily shut down the channel, but services resumed later that day. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse responded, condemning the exploitation of crypto users.
The official Youtube channel of the Supreme Court of India was hacked on Friday. Typically used to stream live hearings of Constitution Bench cases and matters of public interest, the channel was found displaying videos promoting a scam involving cryptocurrency XRP. Following the breach, the channel was temporarily taken down to address the issue.
The Supreme Court acknowledged the hack by posting a notice on its official website, stating:
This is to inform all concerned that the Youtube channel of Supreme Court of India has been taken down.
“The services on Youtube channel of Supreme Court of India will be resumed shortly,” the notice adds. Later that same day, the Court confirmed the restoration of its channel, announcing: “The Youtube channel of Supreme Court of India is live and up. The services on Youtube channel of Supreme Court of India have been resumed.”
The breach became evident when a video titled “Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds to the SEC’s $2 Billion Fine! XRP Price Prediction” went live on the channel. The video encourages viewers to send Ripple XRP with the promise of receiving double the amount in return. Following the incident, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse commented on social media platform X:
Ripple and execs will NEVER ask you to send us XRP. It’s pathetic to see scammers prey on & exploit innocent crypto users, and the ease at which social media platforms allow it to happen. Stop, spot, avoid – protect yourself.
