Snap Acquires AR Startup Illumix to Strengthen Smart Glasses and Spatial Computing Ambitions

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has acquired augmented reality (AR) technology firm Illumix as part of its strategy to deepen its presence in spatial computing and wearable technology.

The deal, first reported by Variety, will see Snap integrate Illumix’s mapping and AR capabilities into its growing ecosystem of products, particularly its next-generation smart glasses initiative, Specs. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisition reflects Snap’s increasing focus on augmented reality as it seeks to position itself at the forefront of emerging computing platforms. The company said Illumix’s expertise in building real-world AR experiences and scaling mapping technology played a key role in the transaction. Snap is also expected to retain the majority of Illumix’s workforce.

Founded in 2017 by Kirin Sinha, Illumix has developed a range of AR products designed to blend digital content with physical environments. The company gained industry attention after co-developing an augmented reality version of the popular video game franchise Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, released in 2019. In recent years, it has also expanded into AI-powered experiences that interact with and adapt to real-world surroundings.

The acquisition comes months after Snap launched a dedicated subsidiary, Specs Inc., focused on developing AR eyewear. The company is expected to unveil further updates related to its Specs platform during the upcoming Augmented World Expo 2026 in Long Beach, California, later this month.

Snap has repeatedly highlighted augmented reality as a core growth area. In its latest shareholder communication, the company described smart glasses as the next major shift in consumer computing, comparable to the smartphone revolution. It also reported a significant increase in AR content creation, with the number of lenses developed for Specs rising 28% year-on-year.

The company's broader business performance has also shown improvement. During the first quarter of 2026, Snap reported revenue of $1.53 billion, representing a 12% increase from the previous year, while narrowing its net loss. Its flagship platform, Snapchat, reached 483 million daily active users during the quarter, reflecting continued audience growth.
