Samsung Electro-Mechanics – a subsidiary of the Samsung we all know and love – has developed the world’s first ultra-small all-solid-state battery, according to a report in Business Korea.
And the big news is that the company intends to use this new battery tech to power wearables first and foremost.
The battery boasts an industry-leading energy density of 200Wh/L, compact size, and enhanced safety due to its non-flammable solid electrolyte.
It’s expected to power devices like the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch. There’s no word on the type of battery life that could be expected from a smartwatch running a ‘dream battery’ – but even getting a standard Samsung Galaxy Watch to 2-3 days would be a big deal.
Battery life is still the biggest compromise for smartwatches that run fully-featured operating systems, such as the Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch.
According to the report, Samsung has secured over 40 patents related to this technology, drawing from its expertise in ceramic capacitors.
The prototype battery is being “evaluated by corporate clients”, but, if all goes well, mass production is planned for 2026.
One to keep on your radar.
