The stage is set for the highly-anticipated T20I series between India and England which is scheduled to start from January 22 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Indian and England will be up against each other in the five-match T20I series. Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India's squad squad on January 12, Saturday which saw Mohammed Shami walking into Men in Blue's fold after a long injury layoff.
However, some key players have been omitted from the squad. Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who recently impressed with his performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has been left out of the team.
Jaiswal is widely regarded as a crucial member of India's T20I setup. Reports were also doing rounds about Jaiswal's potential inclusion in the squad for the upcoming series against England. However, when the BCCI announced the squad, Jaiswal's name was notably absent.
Jaiswal's omission drops a massive hint that he will be included in Team India's squad for the ODI series against England and, more importantly, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as suggested by earlier reports. By resting him from the T20I series, the team management wants to manage his workload and ensure he is fully prepared for the all-important white-ball series and Champions Trophy.
Moreover, Jaiswal's exclusion from the T20I squad could also hint at a potential shift in the opening order for the ODI team. His impressive performances across formats could position him as a strong contender to challenge Shubman Gill for the coveted opening spot in the ODI lineup.
Given Yashasvi Jaiswal's exclusion from the squad, it is likely that Abhishek Sharma will partner with Sanju Samson to open the innings for India in this series.
But Mohammed Shami's return remained the highlight of India's T20I squad for England series who will be making his international comeback after two years.
Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (vc), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel (wk).
