MANILA, Philippines — Integrated telecommunications company PLDT Inc. will launch the country’s first Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform at next week’s Philippine Digital Convention.

PLDT, through PLDT Enterprise and its wireless arm Smart Communications Inc., has teamed up with Nokia for the Smart IoT platform, which is seen to transform the way IoT applications are deployed and managed in the country.

PLDT first vice-president and head of PLDT Enterprise core business solutions group Jojo Gendrano said the platform would formally go live during the Philippine Digital Convention 2021 scheduled on Oct. 6 to 8.

“We’re pleased to announce the launch of a platform which we strongly believe will revolutionize and transform the way our customers do business via the Internet-of-Things. We’re launching at Digicon and we’re extremely excited about the possibilities this platform can bring,” Gendrano said.

“Simply put, IoT pertains to anything that is connected that collects and transmits data so that a desirable action or outcome is obtained,” he said.

The platform is seen further complementing PLDT Enterprise’s already extensive solutions portfolio.

This year’s PH Digicon, which carries the theme “revolution,” would serve as a platform where industry experts, thought leaders and international decision-makers will convene to discuss novel ways of doing business.

It is set to attract 20,000 delegates from around the world in its three-day run.

PH Digicon was established by PLDT Enterprise in 2014 to help drive technological enablement among enterprises throughout the country and the region.

PLDT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan is hopeful that a lot of new ideas will emerge from the upcoming convention.

“The virus has in the last 18 months developed a number of variants, the most potent of which is the Delta variant and that has created ripple effect and impacts on people’s lives, on businesses and economy in general. So it poses new challenges, some of which can be best addressed by technology. And that is perhaps the main point of this convention,” Pangilinan said.

“There are many things that technology can do, and you need infra for that. But you also need the solutions to translate the infra into more than infra, but as a service as well,” he said.
