OpenAI eyes ChatGPT expansion to smart glasses and wearables, says Greg Brockman
OpenAI is working to bring ChatGPT to a broader range of devices, with smart glasses and wearables emerging as a key focus for future integrations. Speaking during a media briefing in New York, OpenAI President Greg Brockman said the company wants ChatGPT to extend beyond smartphones and computers as it builds AI assistants designed to handle everyday tasks.
Brockman said OpenAI is interested in enabling wider integration through application programming interfaces (APIs), allowing developers to bring ChatGPT to different devices. He added that the company sees AI assistants as an interface that should be available across devices, while noting that wearable APIs are still at an early stage of development.
AI assistant vision
Explaining the company's long-term direction, Brockman said OpenAI aims to build an AI assistant comparable to Iron Man's Jarvis, capable of interacting with computers and applications instead of functioning only as a chatbot. He also indicated that future versions of ChatGPT would not remain confined to standalone applications.
Brockman also pointed to OpenAI's Codex technology, which already allows AI systems to operate computers and carry out tasks across applications. He said traditional interactions such as clicking and typing may eventually give way to AI systems that complete tasks through more natural voice-based interactions.
Wearables and hardware plans
According to Brockman, OpenAI wants to develop APIs tailored for wearable devices, which require continuous background access and support for camera-based multimodal capabilities. Such integrations could allow third-party smart glasses, pendants and other wearable products to provide more advanced ChatGPT experiences linked to users' accounts.
He also indicated that OpenAI's hardware efforts remain underway, describing the company's planned device as a solution to a problem it believes has not been adequately addressed. While discussing future AI hardware, Brockman acknowledged that issues including privacy, safety, resource use and regulation will continue to shape the development of increasingly capable AI assistants.
