OpenAI is asking users of its Mac software to update to the latest releases from today “out of an abundance of caution.” This is due to a security issue with a third-party developer tool, Axios, that was used by OpenAI.
The company emphasizes that it found no evidence of OpenAI user data being accessed.
More details from the Friday evening announcement:
We recently identified a security issue involving a third-party developer tool, Axios, that was part of a widely reported, broader industry incident?. Out of an abundance of caution we are taking steps to protect the process that certifies our macOS applications are legitimate OpenAI apps. We found no evidence that OpenAI user data was accessed, that our systems or intellectual property was compromised, or that our software was altered.
We are updating our security certifications, which will require all macOS users to update their OpenAI apps to the latest versions. This helps prevent any risk—however unlikely—of someone attempting to distribute a fake app that appears to be from OpenAI.
Links to OpenAI’s four Mac apps — ChatGPT, Codex, Atlas, and Codex CLI — can be found here. After May 8, older versions of these apps may no longer work. More details about the situation can be found in the announcement post.
