OpenAI on Thursday launched ChatGPT Agent, an AI system that can autonomously control computers, browse websites, and complete complex tasks like creating presentations or booking travel without human intervention.

The system, available to paying ChatGPT subscribers, runs on its own virtual computer and can navigate websites, execute code, and access external data sources like Google Drive. Users access it by selecting “agent mode” from ChatGPT’s tools menu.

“Agent represents a new level of capability for AI systems and can accomplish some remarkable, complex tasks for you using its own computer,” CEO Sam Altman wrote Thursday.

However, Altman warned of significant security risks, noting that bad actors may try to trick AI agents into inappropriate actions “in ways we can’t predict.” He described the technology as “cutting edge and experimental” and advised against using it for high-stakes situations.

Pro subscribers receive 400 monthly queries, while Plus and Team users get 40 queries per month. The launch puts OpenAI in direct competition with similar AI agents being developed by Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Anthropic, and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT).
