Imagine stepping into your next doctor’s visit, after already getting immediate advice and next steps from GPT Health about your current burning issue. All you need is your GP’s approval or referral for insurance purposes. Is this the future of family medicine?

OpenAI issued a new mode we all knew was coming: ChatGPT Health. The company introduced this dedicated service earlier this week, responding, as it claims, to over 230 million people chatting with GPT about health and wellness each week.

A new dedicated health space will allow users to connect their medical and wellness data, including information from apps such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal, as well as from their actual medical records, through partnerships with b.well, aggregating comprehensive records from millions of US providers, including labs, imaging, diagnoses, care plans, medication, and actual physician notes. ChatGPT will integrate all this vast information as the basis for a health-related conversation.

This is the first time a Large Language Model engine openly takes responsibility for personal and confidential health information, inviting users to ask direct questions about their health, their insurance coverage, and the medical treatment plan recommended by their own physicians. A transformative step in integrating GenAI in our personal health journey.

According to OpenAI, their new tool is “not intended for diagnosis or treatment,” as “Health (ChatGPT Health) is designed to support, not replace, medical care.” But is it so?

LLMs have an unparalleled advantage in integrating huge volumes of information and synthesizing a personal response. Now, as ChatGPT will have access not only to your entire medical record, but to your dietary intake, number of steps you’ve taken, the amount of money you spend on supplements, social media, and your most burning overall questions, tone, and interests from your health and non-health-related conversations, the medical space is disrupted.

Today, family physicians have limited information, limited time, and a human limitation in their ability to integrate such vast and diverse sources. This gives LLMs an insurmountable advantage.

It is still unknown how this new medical framework will interpret mental health issues, such as PTSD, anxiety, or somatic symptom disorder. Given the vast access to our daily questions and conversations, the LLM should diagnose these conditions much earlier than family physicians. These often belated diagnoses will undergo a complete transformation compared to the patient journey today.

No physician will be able to compete, in the long run, with such systems. The real question is how a new hybrid model of medicine will evolve; a model that will preserve a personal relationship and an ability to overrule when needed.
