Nvidia researchers have shared their latest progress in developing quantum computing through simulations that use graphics processing units (GPUs). This work is part of the ongoing effort to build functional and commercially viable quantum computers.
Quantum computers work differently from classic computers. While regular computers use binary switches (0s and 1s) for calculations, quantum computers use qubits, which follow the principles of quantum physics to perform more complex computations.
There are several methods for building quantum computers, but Nvidia is focusing on quantum annealing. They are using their expertise with GPUs from gaming and artificial intelligence applications for this purpose.
In their recent study, Nvidia’s team used hundreds of thousands of GPUs across multiple clusters to simulate quantum annealing systems. This is different from traditional quantum simulations, which usually rely on CPU-based supercomputers.
The researchers tackled a major challenge in quantum annealing systems by addressing the problem of magnetic particles suddenly changing behavior. They proposed a solution involving precise control of magnetic fields.
Furthermore, Quantum annealing systems are being developed to solve specific optimization problems rather than for general computing tasks. Industries that could benefit from this technology include quantum sensing, transportation, logistics, energy, finance, and blockchain.
For instance, quantum annealing could enhance forecasting accuracy and improve portfolio management in finance.
This progress report shows Nvidia’s innovative approach to quantum computing and highlights the potential of GPU technology beyond its traditional uses.
