Federal authorities on Friday announced sweeping drone restrictions around Super Bowl LX, placing large sections of Santa Clara and San Francisco under temporary flight bans as part of heightened security measures for the NFL's championship game.
The Federal Aviation Administration, working with the FBI, said it will enforce "No Drone Zones" at and around Levi's Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday, as well as in parts of downtown San Francisco during the week leading up to the event.
Officials warned that unauthorized drone flights could result in fines of up to $75,000, confiscation of equipment and potential federal criminal charges.
According to the FAA, the restrictions are part of standard security protocols for nationally significant events and are being enforced using temporary flight restrictions, or TFRs.
The FBI said it will deploy federally authorized counter-drone capabilities to detect, track and assess unauthorized aircraft, with personnel from both agencies working full-time to monitor activity that could threaten public safety, aviation or critical infrastructure.
In San Francisco, drone flights will be restricted around venues including Moscone Center, the Ferry Building, Grace Cathedral and the Palace of Fine Arts on multiple days from Feb. 3 through Feb. 7, generally between afternoon and late evening hours.
The restrictions vary by location but typically extend up to 2,000 feet above ground level.
On Super Bowl Sunday, the airspace around Levi's Stadium will be subject to the most expansive controls.
From mid-afternoon through the end of the game, drones will be barred within a 30-nautical-mile radius of the stadium, with altitude limits reaching nearly 18,000 feet.
Tighter inner zones will prohibit nearly all unauthorized aircraft operations.
Federal officials said the Super Bowl is one of the few events where the FBI uses full counter-drone protection, citing growing concerns about the potential misuse of unmanned aircraft at major public gatherings.
Additional security measures will include low-altitude helicopter surveys conducted by the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration earlier in the week, which officials emphasized are routine and not a cause for public alarm.
The FAA urged drone operators and pilots to review official notices to air missions, or NOTAMs, and check its Super Bowl flight advisory website frequently, noting that restrictions may be updated as the event approaches.
