Google unveiled plans for a big new AI investment in Germany.
The tech giant said on Nov. 11 that it’s set to invest approximately €5.5 billion (nearly $6.4 billion) in the country – its largest European investment to date – in a package that will span until 2029.
And while the plan is far-reaching and encompasses several different areas, at its core is a serious intent to dominate the German AI landscape.
The main component of the plan is the construction of a new data center in Dietzenbach, located a few miles southeast of Frankfurt, the European Union’s main financial center, in western Germany.
At the same time, Google will invest more money in its existing data center in Hanau, located nearly 15 miles northeast of Dietzenbach.
The sites will be integral to Google’s cloud presence in Germany, which is part of a network of 42 regions globally that provide the computing infrastructure required to enable companies to develop their own AI applications. In Germany, automaker Mercedes-Benz and printing tech company Koenig & Bauer are among the big names already taking advantage of Google cloud services.
Google’s AI services include the generative AI platform Vertex AI, and Gemini models. The tech giant said it will continue to deliver sovereign cloud systems, ensuring companies can adhere to local regulations. AI sovereignty is a top priority for many European countries, given the wariness on the continent of tech dominance by U.S. companies.

Google also sought to highlight the project’s efficiency credentials, with the Dietzenbach center promising to be the vendor’s first heat recovery project in the country. A partnership with local heating firm EVO will see excess heat from the center fed into more than 2,000 homes, following a similar Google initiative in Finland.
Other elements of the investment include increased office space in Munich, Berlin, and Frankfurt, as well as several digital skilling initiatives with local organizations and educational institutions.
The project was hailed by Karsten Wildberger, Germany’s minister for digital transformation and government modernization, who said in a release: "We want Germany to play in the top league when it comes to data centers in Europe. Google's investment shows our country is an attractive location for investments in digital infrastructure."
"We'll keep working together with leading international tech firms while at the same time pushing our own innovation and value creation for even more growth," Wildberger said.

Marianne Janik, VP Google Cloud EMEA North, added: "A sovereign digital future must be built in Europe, for Europe. We are here to be a trusted partner for Germany, co-creating a future that is secure, sovereign, sustainable, and powered by world-changing innovation."
