Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed India to get on a ‘trophy winning spree’ if they win the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, India are all set to take on South Africa in the final of the World Cup on Saturday, June 29 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Both teams have made to the finals being unbeaten in the tournament so far.
South Africa have won eight matches on the trot towards the road to the final. On the other hand, India have won seven matches out of eight with one game being a washout against Canada. Hence, it will be the first time in the history of the tournament that an unbeaten team will win the trophy.
Ahead of the final, Vaughan feels that if India manages to win the World Cup they will get on a trophy-winning juggernaut.
“I feel if India get the job done today they are going to go on a trophy-winning spree .. they have so much quality in and out of this squad .. Its been 10 yrs since they won a trophy and this one could lead to quite a few over the next years .. #T20WC2024Final,” wrote Vaughan on his X account.
Notably, India haven’t won an ICC title since their Champions Trophy triumph in 2013 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Since then, the Asian heavyweights have qualified for the knockout stages of nine out of the last ten tournaments but a title victory has eluded them. The T20 World Cup final will be India’s third consecutive final in ICC events after they were beaten by Australia in their last two finals.
On the other hand, South Africa will be playing their first-ever final of a World Cup event. The Proteas’ only ICC trophy triumph came back in 1998 when they won the ICC Knockout Cup (now known as the Champions Trophy). Apart from that, they’ve reached the knockout stages of 11 ICC events but have failed to clinch the trophy. Hence, the upcoming fixture will be crucial for both teams who will be looking to finally bring an end to their ICC Trophy drought.
