Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar shone on Day 3 of the Duleep Trophy with a seven-wicket haul for India C. With Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja dominating red-ball cricket with their finger spin for more than a decade, the realisation has recently come about who would succeed them. The team has rarely looked past them, and with the veterans now nearing the twilight of their careers, the hunt is on for another finger spinner. While the likes of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are already flourishing in their roles, Suthar's impressive performance has brought a breath of fresh air.
The Rajasthan-born spinner picked up seven wickets at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur on Saturday, September 7. These are also the best figures by a spinner at the venue in first-class cricket. His exploits with the ball began by the end of Day 2 in the match between India C and India D. India D captain Shreyas Iyer and Devdutt Padikkal played counter-attacking innings, both scoring fifties. However, the team lost five wickets in the final session, with Suthar claiming all five of them in the last 15 overs of the day.
The Anantapur pitch offered a sharp turn and bounce, and Suthar made full use of the conditions. The 22-year-old orchestrated a remarkable collapse, reducing India D from 186/4 to 203/8. His key scalps included Padikkal and the well-set Ricky Bhui. Suthar also cleaned up the tail, finishing with magical figures of 7/49 in 19.1 overs.
Suthar made his Ranji Trophy debut for Rajasthan in 2022, boasting 65 wickets in 14 First-Class matches. His breakthrough season came in 2022-2023, when he emerged as Rajasthan's leading wicket-taker with 39 scalps. This year, he was part of India A, which hosted three unofficial Tests against the England Lions. He played one game and picked up five wickets across two innings.
