CARE home residents are taking virtual trips to beaches and cities without ever leaving their armchairs.

This is part of an extended partnership with Recreo VR, a UK-based provider of immersive virtual reality experiences, at Tabley House Nursing Home in Knutsford.

The extended collaboration will give residents year-round access to Recreo VR’s interactive headsets, which recreate environments connected to personal memories, interests and past hobbies.

Deborah Jones, home manager at Tabley House, said: "VR is no gimmick, it's a window to the wider world.

"We're witnessing brighter moods, sharper memories and deeper engagement when the headsets are used.

"The impact Recreo VR has on our residents is truly inspiring.

"These immersive environments can rekindle a spark and facilitate breakthroughs we might not otherwise see.

"It's about bringing the world to them and enriching their lives in ways we've only dreamed of."

The sessions regularly transport residents to relaxing coastal scenes, lively urban settings and favourite holiday destinations, all without leaving the care home.

Recreo VR specialises in creating virtual experiences for older adults and individuals with cognitive or physical impairments.

Its platform is now in use at more than 300 care providers across the UK.

The idea behind Recreo VR was inspired by a personal story.

Founders Sam and Alex created the service after witnessing the effect a real-life beach visit had on Sam’s grandmother Joyce, who lived with dementia and struggled to communicate.

They said: "We believe that virtual reality has the power to transform the lives of residents, build social connections and enhance their quality of life.

"We want to empower care organisations to embrace new technology and create experiences in their settings that have noticeable impact on both residents, their families and staff that go beyond the traditional approaches.

"Our mission is to make meaningful moments possible, no matter a person’s age or ability.

"The results at Tabley House show how immersive content can trigger memories and spark joy."

They added that VR can improve communication, lift moods and reduce feelings of loneliness.

With lightweight headsets and individual support, even bed-bound residents are able to enjoy the full experience.
