Quantum computing firm Infleqtion has supplied a Japanese research team with a quantum processing unit (QPU) to support the launch of Japan’s first operational neutral-atom full-stack quantum system.
Dubbed Shunkai, the quantum computer is expected to initially operate with approximately 50 qubits, eventually scaling to 500 qubits as development of the system continues.

In its next phase, the team undertaking the Ohmori Moonshot project will focus on improving system integration, stability, and scalability. The quantum computer will be made available to external users across academia and industry to support the development of applications and advance quantum error correction research.
Professor Kenji Ohmori is leading the project at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), part of Japan’s National Institutes of Natural Sciences. Infleqtion was the only foreign quantum partner selected by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) for its Quantum Moonshot program. Moonshot Goal 6 aims to build a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer and quantum Internet by 2050.
“This milestone marks a pivotal moment for Japan’s quantum ambitions as well as Infleqtion’s role in advancing production-ready quantum platforms at scale,” said Pranav Gokhale, chief technology officer at Infleqtion.
“Bringing a full-stack quantum system into production operation is a meaningful step toward fault-tolerant quantum computing that also serves as strong validation of neutral-atom architecture. Our quantum processing unit delivers the programmability, scalability, and fidelity control that next-generation systems demand.”
Founded as ColdQuanta and spun out from the University of Colorado in 2007, Infleqtion develops and designs instruments and systems for quantum technology applications.
In September 2025, the company announced plans to go public via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) merger with Churchill Capital Corp X. The company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in February 2026, following the completion of the deal.
