August is here, which means we’re nearing the end of summer. Frankly, that’s excellent news for anyone who has had enough of heatwaves. It’s been hot enough to see the air itself, and we’re done with it.
Summer can sometimes be a quieter time for new releases. That is very much not the case this year. August is packed with all sorts of brilliant-looking indie games, so let’s take a look at some of the highlights.

Anomaly President is a roguelike action game about trying to build a better world. By day, you’ll chase votes and keep people on side. By night, you’ll take down enemies as either a sword-wielding master or a cyber mage. It’s an absurdly silly concept, but it looks like a lot of fun. There’s also definitely a character in there with Sanji-style powers, which feels worth noting.

Big Walk is a cooperative multiplayer adventure from House House, the creators of Untitled Goose Game. It’s all about teamwork, talking, and getting pleasantly lost with your friends. You’ll explore a wide-open world full of puzzles, challenges, and strange little discoveries. To stay in contact, you’ll use proximity voice chat, gestures, walkie-talkies, and whatever else you can find. It sounds like the kind of game where half the fun comes from the plan going wrong.

Cat Chaos is another entry in the “be a cat and knock things over” genre. As ever, we’re here for it. This time, you can choose the specific style of cat you want to cause trouble as. Then you can spin around destroying objects and hunting for collectables. It all looks very cute, and could be a perfect way to unwind after a stressful day.

Doloc Town has been in Early Access for a while now, and in August, it finally hits its full release. It’s a beautiful pixel art farming game set after the end of the world. Unlike most games in the genre, it also plays out as a side-scroller. Alongside all the farming, you’ll need to fight off monsters here and there, so expect a little pushback while you’re trying to rebuild.

Sovereign Tower has you recruiting and managing knights whilst managing your kingdom’s future from inside a magical tower. It looks absolutely stunning, and so if you like story-heavy games with plenty of flair, this one should be worth a look. There’s also a time-rewinding mechanic for revisiting decisions, which should make managing all those big heroic egos even more interesting.

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is the follow-up to the hit 50v50 FPS Hell Let Loose. Once again, players will need to work together through massive tactical battles inspired by history. It’s all about coordinating with your squad, securing objectives, and helping your team win the day. If it can capture the intensity of the original, this could be a major one for shooter fans.

Dwarrf: A Pinball Roguelike is more or less what you’d expect from the title. There’s more going on here than pinball alone, though. Alongside all the bouncing around, there are hints of Peggle and Bubble Bobble in the mix. You’ll also collect plenty of powers as you go. It looks excellent, and we’re very ready for it to consume our free time.

L8R SK8R is a 3D platformer inspired by classic collectathon games. There’s a hub world to mess around in and plenty of things to chase down. The twist is that, instead of collecting crystals or gems, you’re collecting time. You’ll need to blast through missions as quickly as possible to lower your total time and unlock the next area. It’s a very cool concept. It should land nicely with arcade fans and platforming obsessives alike.
