Gill’s elevation means that Rohit Sharma will not lead the team, even though Rohit and the other stalwart, Virat Kohli, are still in the side to tour Australia.

Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, addressed the media shortly after the IND vs WI Test ended at Narendra Modi Stadium, where he explained why the selectors had elevated Shubman over Rohit, despite the latter leading India to the Champions Trophy title the last time the Men in Blue played an ODI. This will mean that despite not being the captain, a highly-anticipated comeback will be on the cards for Rohit Sharma — and Virat Kohli too — for the first time in nearly eight months since the victorious Champions Trophy campaign.
