Bloomberg reported last week that Google is readying to launch a screenless wearable under the Fitbit brand, which the company acquired in 2021. The band would be entering a competitive market, going up against the likes of Whoop and Oura in addition to Garmin’s screenless wearable, Cirqa, expected in the near future.

In its reporting, Bloomberg cites a source “with knowledge on the matter” who sheds light on what we can expect from Google’s new product. The source declined to be identified further; however, they did reveal that the screenless smartband will provide customers with basic features but will require a paid subscription for more advanced features.
The device is also expected to have deep integration with Fitbit’s new AI-powered personal health coach, available on the redesigned Fitbit app. This feature became available for public preview in October.
Basketball star Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors stirred up additional buzz for the product with his Instagram post teasing the new product. In the video he posted, you can see slow-motion clips of Curry playing basketball while wearing the screenless Fitbit. Meanwhile, the video promises “A new relationship with your health.” And says that the product is “coming soon.”
In the video, you can see that the wearable features a grey fabric-like band with orange lining. The product looks extremely similar to Whoop’s fitness tracking band, only in a different color way. This brings up the question of whether or not the band is similar enough to Whoop’s product that they may try to sue Fitbit for patent infringement. Earlier this year, Whoop went after Chinese competitor Lexqi and its screenless wearable design. In that case, the court granted a preliminary injunction.
With the release of Garmin’s Cirqa band anticipated soon, many thought that it would be the next big news in screenless wearables, but now it seems as though Fitbit could, in fact, beat Garmin to release. What will it mean to have yet another competitor in the space when the Cirqa finally does come to market? Perhaps for dedicated Garmin users, it won’t change much, but there is always the potential that customers who haven’t been lured in by Whoop but are looking for a similar product could go for the Fitbit band if it arrives first.
Realistically, it is hard to determine who will be a frontrunner before all the features of each band are known, and there is always the possibility that legal proceedings may get in the way, but it is clear that the screenless wearable race is continuing to heat up just as Garmin prepares to jump in.
