The update enables enterprise users to securely send and access encrypted emails on Android and iOS, eliminating reliance on external tools while ensuring compliance, data control, and seamless communication across devices and platforms.
In a move aimed at strengthening enterprise-grade security, Google has expanded Gmail’s end-to-end encryption capabilities to mobile devices. The update allows users to compose, send, and read encrypted emails directly within the Gmail app on both Android and iOS, removing the earlier dependency on desktop access or third-party solutions.
The feature is part of Google’s client-side encryption framework, designed primarily for organisations that manage sensitive information and require tighter control over data security. With this rollout, encryption takes place on the sender’s device before the email is transmitted, ensuring that only authorised recipients can access the content.
Users can activate encryption while drafting an email by selecting a lock icon and enabling additional protection. Once sent, the encrypted message appears as a regular email thread for Gmail users, maintaining a familiar interface without compromising security.
For recipients using other email services, Google has introduced a secure web-based access system. These users can view and respond to encrypted emails through a browser, ensuring interoperability without weakening encryption standards. This approach addresses one of the long-standing challenges of secure email communication—compatibility across platforms.
The update also focuses on usability. By embedding encryption directly into the Gmail interface, Google aims to make advanced security features more accessible, even for users without technical expertise. The integration removes friction often associated with secure email tools, such as additional logins or external portals.
Currently, the feature is available to Google Workspace enterprise customers who have enabled client-side encryption. Administrators must activate mobile support through the Admin Console before users can access the functionality. Google has confirmed that the rollout is underway for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.
For businesses, the expansion ensures that sensitive communications remain protected regardless of the device used. Importantly, organisations retain control over encryption keys, supporting compliance with data sovereignty and regulatory requirements.
The move reflects a broader industry shift towards privacy-first communication tools, as enterprises increasingly demand secure, flexible, and user-friendly solutions. By bringing end-to-end encryption to mobile platforms, Google is reinforcing Gmail’s position as a secure and versatile communication platform for modern workplaces.
