BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - What’s causing big changes to the gaming industry? Recently, the industry has seen massive layoffs, declining sales, and a post-pandemic slump causing ripple effects in the overall landscape.
Experts in the gaming program at Champlain College in Burlington say amid growth during the pandemic when video game popularity was high, companies didn’t keep in mind the long-term consequences of when people went back to work.
Now, to stay sustainable, developers need to keep their eyes on the prize-- the product.
“If they understand player value and player metrics, they’re going to have a lot easier time scoping out the right video game and have more realistic measures and metrics set for success,” said Jessie Gagnon, the chair of the Game Studio Program at Champlain College.

Here in Vermont, Champlain College officials say they are reminding students to apply the skills they learn in the gaming program, like project management and design, to all kinds of work.
