f you’ve ever wanted to enter a video game for yourself but maybe don’t wish to purchase a $300 virtual reality headset, a new immersive experience in the Ballston Quarter Mall can make your dream a (augmented) reality. Electric Gamebox takes games to a whole other level as patrons walk around in a fully private, interactive room — and Arlington is home to one of less than 10 locations in the U.S.

With projection mapping, touch screens, motion tracking, and surround sound, the boxes allow you to enjoy a hyper-immersive gaming experience where you play as if you’re a character. The Gameboxes hold two to six people at once, offering a chance for family and friends 5 years and older to come together as a team.

The eight games offered range from “Temple of Coins,” where you’ll dodge ghosts, supercharge on power ups, and collect coins as you and your team make your way through the temple, to “James Bunny: Casino Tropicale,” where patrons play as Agent James Bunny to take down notorious mafia boss Francisco Salamander, who is using the shady Casino Tropicale as a front for his criminal activities. The games have specific recommendations, like age ranges and whether they’re better as a family activity or for date night.

The games provide for a physical experience, so it’s recommended that you dress accordingly — open-toed shoes are discouraged, and it may be better to wear just one layer, as you may get warm from being active in the Gamebox. There are lockers available for the storage of smaller items, like coats or bags.

If you’re looking to book for a special occasion, Electric Gamebox can provide the entertainment for your team outing, birthday party, or other special celebration. Groups packages are available for upwards of 40 people, though you will be split into different Gameboxes.

The hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, noon-9 p.m.; Friday, noon-10 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Pricing varies depending on age and time spent in the game room, either 30 or 60 minutes depending on the particular game. For junior tickets, available to ages 11 and under, a 30 minute experience is $19.95 and a 60-minute adventure is $29.95. Adults can enjoy 30 minutes of gameplay for $24.95 or 60 for $34.95.
