Flight operations at Luxembourg Airport were temporarily suspended on Friday evening due to the sighting of unauthorized drones.

The airspace was closed as a precautionary measure., the Luxembourg government said on Saturday. In total, 19 incoming flights were diverted to other airports.

"Following two inspections that ruled out any immediate risk to aviation safety, airport operations resumed at approximately 1:20 am (2320 GMT)," on Saturday, the government said in a statement.

An interministerial drone assessment unit was convened to evaluate the situation and review appropriate follow-up measures, the government said.

This is a government coordination body that becomes active during crises. Prime Minister Luc Frieden called in several responsible ministers, relevant authorities and services all of whom "are continuing their exchanges with counterparts in neighbouring countries," according to the statement.

Situation being closely monitored

At this stage, the available findings do not allow for definitive conclusions, the government stated, but it is closely monitoring the situation and remains "fully mobilized to ensure the safety of the population".

No further details regarding the drones' origin were initially provided, with authorities citing security reasons and the ongoing investigation.
