ITV Studios-owned Plimsoll Productions has rolled out new virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) division Plimsoll Immersive, with Alex Ranken set to lead the unit as creative director of natural history.

Plimsoll Immersive will develop original content as well as leverage the company’s existing IP for immersive experiences in both 2D and 3D.

The company’s launch comes soon after UK and US-based Plimsoll Productions (A Real Bug’s Life) announced Josh Brolin-narrated premium nature film Horse Power, a 3D IMAX movie made in collaboration with EOS Films.

Plimsoll is also producing Netflix LIVE event Skyscraper Live, which will see solo climber Alex Honnold (Free Solo) scale the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan without ropes.

Ranken has worked for Plimsoll at its UK headquarters in Bristol for seven years, serving in the role of producer/director. His credits include Tiny World (Apple TV), A Year on Planet Earth (ITV) and The Wild Ones (Apple TV). In addition to his new responsibilities, he will continue to create TV content.

Prior to joining Plimsoll, Ranken had producing and directing roles at True to Nature, Yap Films and the BBC.

Mark Brownlow, head of natural history, said: “Plimsoll has always looked to the future, and Alex represents what comes next – a next-generation creator whose innovative storytelling and command of technology make him the perfect fit to grow this division and propel the company into an exciting new space.”

Ranken said: “Plimsoll has a reputation for visually rich, bold storytelling and editorial integrity. We are now applying those elements in this exciting new world, allowing audiences to be immersed in the story, which ultimately fosters deeper connections and engagement with the natural world.”
