Valve has always developed gear with a purpose in mind, and the Steam Frame is no exception. This portable VR headset promises to bring the whole Steam library into your living room without a tangle of cords or a PC tethered to your waist. The developers discussed the design in a recent video session with Gamers Nexus, revealing the choices they made to balance power, comfort, and transparency.
Start with how it feels on your head, since the Steam Frame weighs 440 grams with the battery strap across the back, which is lighter than most competitors. The face cushion conforms to your skin and the back weight keeps everything balanced so you forget it’s there after a few minutes. The speakers sit just outside your ears, two on each side, and are designed to transmit sound without moving the sensors that track your every move.

When you look at the screens, you’ll notice the LCD panels are 2160 x 2160 per eye and the pancake lenses give you a 110 degree view of the world. The cooling fans hum along to keep the heat away from your face, which is important because these displays are running at higher rates to match fast head movements. The engineers said the heat is not caused by the panels themselves, but by the constant demand for smooth frame rates. Four cameras look outwards for passthrough, turning the real world into a wireframe overlay in monochrome tones because of an infrared light that sharpens the edges without color bleeding.

The eye-tracking cameras scan your gaze over 80 times a second and feed that data into focus information where you look, a process called foveated rendering which sharpens the center and eases up on the edges. The headset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU which is an Arm based processor. This handles local tasks such as playing flat games on a virtual screen or running Windows titles with Fex. A microSD slot lets you import libraries from your Steam Deck or phone. To make sure no power drops happen, the voltage regulators are packed onto the board in such a thick structure it looks like a tiny single board computer. Heat from the chip travels through the sandwiched heat pipes and the circuit board itself, a clever reroute that diverts heat away from critical areas.

As for battery life, it’s rated at 21.6 watt-hours, which is ample for a solid session when connected to a 45-watt USB-C charger, although standalone sessions may be limited to a couple of hours for demanding titles. Streaming mode uses a small dongle that connects to your PC and transmits games via the 6GHz wireless band, bypassing your home router for a cleaner signal. Foveated streaming also kicks in here, sending more data to the area your eyes are focused on, ensuring that visuals remain clear even while over the air. SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based game platform, improves local play by allowing you to sideload Android apps or explore the whole catalog without restrictions.

The Steam Frame shines brightest when it comes to modularity, which encourages you to experiment. The headband and main compute block are easily detachable, with a nose-piece connector providing 2.5Gbps data lines and PCIe slots for add-ons like as additional cameras or bespoke grips. Valve will release full specs and design files so you can build your own accessories and a program for partners to make official ones. Controllers have TMR joysticks for smooth input, a D-pad, tons of buttons and sensors that read all five fingers for natural grabs. They last up to 40 hours on standard AA batteries and even work with the old Steam Controller layout for legacy fans.
