There are plenty of demons you'll have to face in the Bayonetta series, and some will be memorable for frustrating reasons. Here are the toughest.

Though Bayonetta draws strength and gains abilities from certain demons, others are not so fond of the Umbra Witch. A large portion of Bayonetta 2 requires Bayonetta to travel down to the pits of Inferno, where monstrous creatures feast on the souls of the damned. At the beginning of the game, Rodin tells her that even she doesn't have a shot down there, despite her incredible power.

Many of these demons have similar abilities to the angels that were fought throughout the first game, though several have deadlier attacks that pose a greater challenge. Some of these demons are fallen angels, while others are incarnations of pure evil.

10 Fury, Gatherer of Rancor

Appearing like a demonic bat, Fury also has the head of a dragon, the tail of a snake, and a singular cyclops-like eye. Despite this terrifying image, Fury is among the most basic of demons encountered in Inferno. They often accompany other varieties of demons, often flying around them to try and get in a sneak attack. Though they are mostly not a threat to Bayonetta, they can swipe at her if she is airborne for too long.

As the demonic counterparts to the small angels Decorations and Compassion, these pests can also divebomb Bayonetta while she is on the ground. Their largest weakness is their ability to fire a slow-moving shadow ball from their eye, which Bayonetta can easily avoid and use to enter Witch Time. If she is somehow hit, Bayonetta will move slowly for a certain amount of time.

9 Hideous, Craver of Hatred & Hatred, Holder of Enmity

The footsoldiers of Inferno, Hideous & Hatred are humanoid demons that are counterparts of the angels Affinity and Applaud. Like Affinity, Hideous comes in different variations that wield different weapons. The most common type, Hideous A, wields a purple scythe that can be easily countered by timing a dodge. Hideous B wields a set of dual swords that can swing much faster and can deal moderate damage if Bayonetta is not careful.

Variant C is a sniping Hideous, carrying a slow-starting demonic gun of sorts. Shots from this weapon can be avoided whenever a black sand trail appears beneath Bayonetta indicating that it will fire soon. Hatred, like Applaud, is a much larger form of Hideous, carrying a double-ended scythe that can inflict major damage to Bayonetta and even parry her bullets.

8 Malicious, Gazer of Death

A spellcaster demon, Malicious is more annoying than difficult to take out. However, the demon's sphere-like body and large wingspan make it more of a challenge than its angelic counterpart, Enrapture. Never appearing alone, its primary function on the battlefield is to enrage its fellow demons, making their attacks strike faster and harder. It will continue to do this until it is dealt with, so taking out Malicious should be prioritized.

In combat, Malicious may attempt to swipe at Bayonetta with its wings which have a surprising amount of range. It can also execute various other magical attacks, such as firing purple shadow balls and shooting its quilled feathers. Malicious also has a higher than average health bar, and can roll to avoid Wicked Weaves.

7 Pain, Driver of Agony

Though it first appears as a mini-boss in Chapter Five, Pain is later encountered with other demons in regular verses. Occasionally, it can even be accompanied by other Pains. This large transformer-like demon can be considered the demonic equivalent of Beloved, attacking with massive, slow strikes that can deal great damage if they aren't avoided. It is armed on all four limbs with giant saw-like wheels that will try to slam on top of Bayonetta or directly hit her with.

Pain is very resistant to most of Bayonetta's attacks and doesn't have a weak point like Beloved, so the only way to beat it is to continue wailing on it. At a long-distance range, Pain can also snipe at Bayonetta with a large cannon equipped somewhere in its mechanisms.

6 Greed, Confuser of Elements

Named after one of the seven deadly sins, Greed is a three-headed demon dog that appears to be a reference to Cerberus, the hound of Hades in Greek mythology. Greed is unique for being one of the only enemies of Bayonetta to control multiple elements instead of just one. The dog's two front heads breathe fire, while the head on its tail end breathes a freezing blast of ice. Though Greed moves relatively slow on the battlefield, its claw attacks are vicious and blindingly fast if it is enraged by a Malicious.

It also has a biting attack that functions similar to that of the Fairness & Fearless angels. If Bayonetta is hit by one of its fire blasts, she will be knocked back across the battlefield; if she's hit by an ice blast, she will be frozen and vulnerable to attack for a certain amount of time.

5 Insidious, Consumer of All

Taking the form of a giant manta ray, Insidious is quite a versatile demon. In addition to its boss fight, Bayonetta and Loki spend the majority of Chapter Seven inside the demon's stomach. Later, Bayonetta and Rodin ride the top of Insidious to fight an oncoming swarm of demons on the way to Alraune's palace. Despite residing underwater, Insidious appears to have the ability to swim through the air, attacking Bayonetta during her ascent to Fimbulventr.

Despite residing underwater, Insidious appears to have the ability to swim through the air, attacking Bayonetta during her ascent to Fimbulventr.

During its boss fight, Insidious will attempt to ram into Bayonetta, inhale her, and fire off missiles from its mouth. Its signature move is firing purple lasers from its eyes, which Bayonetta must rip out with the fists of Madama Butterfly. Its eyes are guarded with tentacles that lunge at Bayonetta and can cause serious damage if they are not avoided.

4 Pride, Enveloper of Flame

An enhanced form of Pain, Pride is yet another mechanical demon, appearing red instead of blue. Despite being the same size as Pain, Pride attacks much faster, making it difficult to predict when exactly to dodge. On some occasions, Pride will still be able to strike Bayonetta even if she does use Witch Time, making it a deadly adversary. Pride's spoked wheels are also doused in flame, adding insult to injury if they hit the Umbra Witch.

According to the Lemegeton's Guidebook text, Pride was once a chariot of Jubileus who fell from Paradiso and became a fearsome demon. Though Pride will not fight alongside Pain, its attack patterns make it deadlier than two Pains attacking at once.

3 Sloth, Embracer of Extremes

A humanoid demon with six arms, Sloth appears vaguely similar to depictions of Baphomet, a being commonly associated with the occult. Sloth's multiple arms give it access to wield katanas in each one, and its blinding speed makes it one of the most challenging enemies in the entire game. Unless Witch Time is activated, Sloth will often avoid most of Bayonetta's attacks by switching the arms it stands on.

Sloth's attacks are difficult to time a dodge, as it will sometimes wait for Bayonetta to dodge first and then strike. The demon can even resist death from a Torture Attack, often reanimating quickly if it is not at low health. A Sloth accompanied by Malicious almost guarantees serious injury, due to Bayonetta having no time to avoid its powerful slashes.

2 Resentment, Swindler of Progress

During the main story of Bayonetta 2, Resentment only appears in Chapter Ten. A serpent demon wearing the shrunken skulls of its enemies as a necklace, Resentment is one of the most fearsome demons Bayonetta encounters. Skilled at both magic and melee combat, Resentment is one of the only enemies that can cause instant death to Bayonetta and others of her kind.

To do this, Resentment fires a purple beam at the witch that can instantly transform her into her helpless, child self. In this state, Bayonetta is completely vulnerable to attack and cannot dodge. If she tries, she will fall to the ground, allowing Resentment to get close and swallow her whole. This attack can be difficult to see coming and is the cause of many game overs for new and experienced players alike.

1 Alraune, Whisperer of Insanity

The secondary antagonist of Bayonetta 2, Alraune is the demon who got a hold of Jeanne's soul when she was dragged down to Inferno. She feeds on the soul's energy, gaining power as she consumes more. Besides Rodin, Alraune is the only demon to speak to Bayonetta across the games. For some reason, she has a seemingly one-sided rivalry with Madama Butterfly, Bayonetta's contracted demon. Having her own Chapter for her boss fight, Alraune attacks Bayonetta in two phases.

In the first phase, Alraune swipes at Bayonetta with her claws and a large vine whip. She can also avoid many of Bayonetta's Wicked Weaves with a technique that turns her into rose petals. In her second phase, Alraune's bottom half transforms into a giant quadruped monster that has a wide variety of attacks to harm the Umbra Witch.
